According to This Birth Photographer, a C-Section Isn’t ‘Birth’

Oh, anonymous birth photographer—how you've angered many people who've had C-sections. The mommy Facebook group Sanctimommy recently shared a screenshot of a mom-to-be's text conversation with a prospective birth photographer. The mom was having a C-section, and the birth photographer she contacted had some not-so-nice thoughts about shooting her delivery.

The photographer refused to shoot the potential client, allegedly saying, “You aren’t giving birth. You are having a surgery to remove your baby from your abdomen. That is not birth no matter how you swing it, and I for one don’t want to be there to take pictures of it. If you decide to give motherhood a go from the get, let me know and we can schedule your session."

As if that logic isn’t enough to baffle you, the photographer goes on to insinuate that the woman was trying to “cut corners” by having a C-section. Over three thousand women have shared the mom's screenshot, and thousands have commented.

C-sections are far from uncommon. In the U.S., a third of women give birth by C-section each year. Some C-sections are scheduled due to complicated pregnancies while others are emergency procedures that can follow hours of labor. And, yes, having a C-section is still totally "giving birth." "Whether you give birth vaginally or abdominally, it’s not like one is birthing and the other isn’t," Lauren Streicher, M.D., an associate professor of clinical obstetrics and gynecology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, previously told SELF.

Anyone who has experienced a C-section, or knows someone who has, is aware that recovering from this major surgery is the opposite of cutting corners. The pain from the procedure can actually last longer than the pain of vaginal birth.

Bottom line: This birth photographer is seriously confused—and missing out on a great opportunity, too. C-sections can lead to amazing birth photographs, as these 21 photos prove.
